SUMMER LEAGUE
AWAY
BIRDCAGE
With the season drawing to a rapid
close and the Tulip ‘C’ looking set for topping the table, there was just one
more match to play. But with Tam out
working & MJ called in for work at short notice the Tulip c were 2 players
down. Mike was drafted in to cover Tam
but Gordon was unavailable due to family commitments & suffering from a bad
back. So the Tulip ‘C’ team could only
muster 5 players for their final match.
However one last-ditch attempt to draft Gordon in proved successful and
the Tulip ‘C’ were back at full strength.
Waspy got the travelling side off to a
good start winning after a shaky start and the table itself proving to have a
mind of its own. The
loose cloth sending the balls in different directions & some of the pockets
being tight. However once he had
mastered the table Waspy was always going to come out victorious. 0-1.
Glenn’s true form now seems to be
showing itself as he cruised through for a comfortable win with only the odd
dodgy shot arising, again down to the awkward table conditions. 0-2.
The first 45’s went to the wire as Ian
& Mike were always playing catch-up, neither player making huge
breaks. With the scores at 44-44 Ian had
to break the pack open and hope for a single ball to present itself. When the pack split Ian had just 1 tricky
shot and failure would mean defeat. But
Ian held his nerve and made the pot Ian making 23 points after a 4 point
deduction and Mike 9, also after a 4 point deduction. 0-4.
Gordon arrived during the first 45’s
and went instantly into his singles.
Initially looking good for a win Gordon stormed through the pack. But the Bird Cage player wasn’t to be outdone
and made an equally impressive break before giving Gordon a do or die
situation. Gordon made a pot but somehow
potted the white as well. With 2 visits
the home side gained their first point of the night. 1-4.
Trevor should have lost despite being
in control for most of his frame. Getting to the black first Trevor fell prey
to the tight pocket and watched as his opponent mopped up his remaining balls
to be presented with the black over the pocket where Trevor had left it. But a poor choice of cue action saw the white
follow the black into the pocket gifting Trevor the win. 1-5.
The second 45’s saw Gordon & Waspy
pair up for the first time. But it was
to be a game that took well over an hour to complete during which 2 referees
were replaced! Like the first 45’s the frame went down to the wire and at 44-43
Waspy was presented with a no pot situation, however like he did a couple of
weeks ago, Waspy went for a big pack split shot and this time kept the white on
the table. He also potted 2 balls in the
process which game the tulip pair the game.
Gordon, despite playing with a bad back made 27 and Waspy 10, both
having 2 point deductions. 1-7.
With the night already late Ian had to
rush through his frame against the woman in the Bird Cage side. Ian should also have a loss next to his name
but was fortunate the home side were also struggling with the table. After his opponent had missed the pot on her
last ball, Ian had a nice straight pot for the black. 1-8.
Mike also had to rush through his frame
and should have won but struggled with the black. His opponent thought he’d won it, then lost it before finding the pocket on the 3rd
attempt! 2-8.
Trevor & Glenn raced through the
final 45’s never really being put into any pressure. Trevor making 16 and Glenn
23 after a 2 point deduction. The
pair won comfortably 13-45.
