Match Report

MONDAY 5th JANUARY 2009

PREMIER A

AWAY

FLYER ‘B’

The first game back after the Christmas break and it was a trip to the Flyer with not one but two objectives in mind. The first was to collect the round of drinks promised by Dan for winning all three doubles against the Compasses last year. For any Compasses players reading this, yes it was THAT game when we had a fluke in each LOL. Trevor had contacted Dan earlier in the day and sure enough his wallet was loaded and the free ale flowed. Cheers mate! Then it was on to more serious matters. In recent years The Flyer has been a team that whilst we have performed well on the night, it never seems quite enough and they were starting to become a bit of a nemesis. So could we break the losing habit, and on their turf as well?

Things started well with Gordon potting his last three balls from a tough opener, followed by Andy accepting the gift of an opponent’s error potting black and cue ball. 0 – 2

However, the Flyer responded by taking the next two frames against Pete, then Ian. I think Dan asked me to mention something about an 8 ball clearance here. You can thank me in the guestbook mate. 2 – 2.

This seemed familiar and surely it could not happen yet again!

Well Rob, then Craig restored the 2 frame advantage with well played frames 2 – 4

Ah ha…. So it’s not going to happen again.

The next two frames went to the home side with both Mike then Trevor losing. Trevor seemed to let a commanding position slip away. Maybe still drunk from Christmas? 4 – 4

Oh Christ, it might happen again…..

The first doubles was contested by Andy and Trevor but they were unable to secure the frame with Trevor still looking out of sorts. 5 – 4

Here we go………

The penultimate frame was then won by Rob and Gordon to set up a final frame decider. 5 – 5

Craig and Ian stepped up and Ian decided it was about time he took the limelight. With a quality 8 ball clearance, and a not so good yelp of ecstasy, Ian took us to that magic number of 6 and we had finally beaten our nemesis. 5 – 6

Couple of mentions:-

1.                 As always, the match with the Flyer was played with fantastic spirit. Cheers lads, but please sort out your heating for next time!

2.                Thank you to Mike for leaving his work at home for 20 minutes to ensure we had 8 players.

3.                And finally to Glen (Wadger) for showing up before going back to HK.

Could we do the whole league a favour next week and beat the pool club? Watch this space.
