9-ASIDE 1ST ROUND
AWAY
TRIANGLE CLUB
The opening round of the 9-Aside saw
the new look Tulip ‘C’ travel to the little known Triangle Club. However it looked to be a tough round for the
Tulip team as they could only muster 7 players due to Peter
being unwell, Tam having a major poker competition, Jamie playing in the
darts league cup final and MJ working.
The rest of the team would only be able to afford to lose 2 games. However a text from MJ informed the Captains
he would be arriving albeit a bit late the pressure was alleviated slightly.
Waspy got off to a flying start but
just couldn’t find the killer touch and was eventually pegged back to
defeat. Ian committed the cardinal sin
of winning the toss and giving the break away and was punished accordingly
having only 2 shots, 1 a pot the other a safety which saw his opponent find a
beauty of a shot and a clearance to follow.
So after only 2 frames the safety net was well and truly torn open for
the Tulip C team. 2-0.
Trevor brought the scores a bit tighter
with a brilliant frame, which gifted his opponent very little. Trevor pulled off some great shots from his
bag of tricks including a fabulous long pot on the black. Glenn made hard work of his frame before eventually
coming through victorious and Gordon put the travelling side in front with a
very tenacious performance that could and should have gone the way of the home
side. 2-3.
Craig’s first game for his new side
started off very brightly indeed with the Tulip man blasting through his balls
without any response. But Craig was left
ruing a couple of missed chances as his opponent pegged him back gradually
before sinking the black when given a chance. 3-3.
With the scores so finely balanced and
the Tulip side only having 2 more players it was do or die time. Trevor was frantically phoning around to find
a 9th player, anyone who could hold a cue would do. MJ however was trying his hardest to make
this act unnecessary and despite the frame providing a real calamity of errors
on both sides it was the Tulip man who won through. The Triangle club team
could feel a little annoyed for failing to pot when the only ball on the table
was the black and their player having 2 visits!
He then fouled and gifted the frame to MJ. 3-4.
It was time for a captain’s innings
with Mike being the only player left for the Tulip side with 2 frames to
play. Mike was behind very early and
looked dead in the water when his opponent all but snookered himself. Mike does love a tactical battle and he
certainly gave the Triangle Club’s player a run for his money. So much so the natives started getting
restless and comments of “lets
just have a re-rack” were overheard. NO
CHANCE! That’s just the sort of thing that gets captain Chrome Dome going! During the frame, Tam made a cameo appearance
after Trevor managed to get hold of him and persuade him to come for the
game. Tam was holding apparently his own
in the poker game and was in position for a cash prize but lost out due to his
dedication to the team. However he
needn’t have bothered as Mike made an easy clearance look hard with both
players on the black. A fluke of the
season nomination goes to Mike for attempting a cut on the black into the top
pocket with deep screw on the cue ball to avoid the in-off. The black missed the top pocket, rattled off
top & side cushion to cruise down the table into the bottom pocket instead
and giving victory to the Premier A team.
