The first match for the Tulip ‘C’ summer league team was against unknown opposition, but it didn’t daunt the home side in any way.  The only regular player to be out of the side for the home team was MJ who couldn’t make it as it was his girlfriend Jess’s birthday so Gordon took the position. Not dressed in their usual Tulip ‘C’ polo shirts the boys decided as the summer league was all about having a laugh, they’d have a laugh in how they dressed.  So donning their Bermuda shirts and Captained by Ian “Fatbloke Bluetooth” (don’t ask! Just look up season’s award for cock-up of the season!), the lads set out for battle.

Waspy started the ball rolling for the home team, and looked to be set to get the first point of the new season.  But the Tulip C’s opener couldn’t find the finishing touch, and when his opponent was given a chance he took it in a flurry of pots. 0-1.

Tam however, looked in no mood for niceties as he rocketed his way through his colours.  But when a tactical battle ensued with Tam needing just one more ball & the black, Tam also showed his patient side.  His opponent became frustrated at Tam’s unwillingness to make a foul and attempted to clear the pocket Tams ball was protecting.  However the shot gave Tam a foul and with 2 visits on the black there was only going to be one outcome. 1-1.

Ian & Gordon paired up for the first 45’s of the season, and it was to be a game best forgotton by Ian. Failing to make any real impact on the game Ian made 2 fouls and only scored 8 points after deductions.  Gordon however was in fighting mood, and had Ian been on form, the pairing would probably have won.  Gordon managed to score a nice 30 points but the lads crashed out 38-45 and gave the travelling side a 1-3 lead.

Trevor cruised though his frame allowing his opponent only 2 visits to the table, and despite a brief potting run by his adversary, Trevor never looked like losing the frame. 2-3.

Glenn started off well in his frame but lost it only by his opponent’s tactical ability.  Covering a pocket & having one of Glenns yellows touching his red the Blue Lion player was always in control, and when Glenn was forced into trying to clear his yellow he potted the red and gave the Blue Lion team their 4th point. 2-4.

Waspy & Tam were never in any danger of losing with Tam on fire & making a 20 point break on his first visit.  The opposition made a small token of resistance but with Waspy getting 12 points & Tam overall making 33 points it was a fairly one-sided encounter. 4-4.

Ian was again the weakest link in the side failing to take advantage of the chances he was given.  A foul by the Captain after he snookered himself gave the opposition the point and put them on the brink of victory. 4-5.

Gordon made difficult work of his frame against the Blue Lion Captain but potting with confidence he was the first on the black.  This he sunk but watched with horror as the white travelled towards the other pocket.  A huge sigh of relief from all the home players was heard as the white rattled in the jaws & sat there. Tiptoeing to his opponent to shake his hand Gordons eyes never left the white praying it not to drop……it didn’t. 5-5.

Trevor & Glenn were left to either snatch victory from the jaws of defeat or crash and burn.  Trevor started off with a break of 10 and Glenn couldn’t get his potting going. The Blue Lion side stayed slightly in front but not for long.  Trevor then made an impressive 26 break before Glenn got himself on the scoreboard with 2.  However the travelling side couldn’t get themselves back into the match and Trevor finished off with an overall score of 43 adding to Glenn’s 2 and it was an opening match win for the Tulip C.
