PREMIER A

COMPASSES ‘B’

At this stage of the campaign last season, these two teams were battling for supremacy at the top of Premier B.  The Compasses ‘B’ won through that season and went up as champions with the Tulip ‘C’ side beginning a major crash in form.  This time round it’s the Tulip ‘C’ who are in pole position with the Compasses ‘B’ still looking comfortable in 4th place.  The last time these two teams met at the Tulip it was the Compasses side who ran out 6-5 winners.  Will history repeat itself?

Mike who’s confidence is at a low at present put himself in for the opening still confident that if he crashed and burnt he still has 7 quality players to fall back on.  It was a gamble well thought out as Mike only had one visit to the table, a visit that produced 3 pots.  Two of his own balls, but the third, an opponent’s.  With 2 visits against players of this quality it was good night for the skipper. 0-1.

Glenn looked like heading for defeat until he was given an opportunity to show his quality, and show it he did. Showing no mercy, the badger swept the table clean and levelling the scores at 1-1.

Craig, still on a downer in form looked like he might get a good run of pots but attempted a tricky pot to the corner pocket that, had it worked out, would have given him the chance to clear the table.  However with the ball rattling out the jaws the Tulip man still looked like he had made the frame look safe.  However a phenomenal clearance from the Compasses man changed the outlook of the game and once more the Compasses were back in front. 1-2.

Ian started off well, petered out mid frame then came back strong to win a frame that could easily have been won by either player much quicker than it did.  But the Tulip ‘C’ vice Captain held his nerve to level the scores once more. 2-2.

The Tulip ‘C‘s other Vice Captain, Gordon, battled through a tough frame to put the Tulip ‘C’ in front for the first time. The inform turtle wax kid had to play a solid potting frame coupled with a few tactical shots but was never really put under any pressure. 3-2.

Pete had his chance to extend the lead but fell foul to an unfortunate clip off one of his own balls and potted the white.  With 2 visits, once again it was game over for the home side and the scores again level at 3-3.

Trevor could (and really should) have lost his frame despite looking the better of the 2 players. Things just didn’t seem to go well for the Tulip C player and when his opponent had a simple clearance failed to make a decent attempt at the black.  Trevor had to make a difficult pot to put his last ball down and get any kind of position on the black.  But Trevor being Trevor, made it look so easy.  A tough pot on the black secured the win though. 4-3.

Tam gave the home side a 2-frame lead entering the doubles despite some badly timed comments from his own team-mates.  Having an easy pot on the black, a comment of “this is a crucial frame” entered the big Scots ears and a simple pot was missed.  His opponent potted his last 2 balls but had no easy shot on the black and Tam was left with another chance.  However his head was still not focused and again he missed his chance.  However when his adversary not only missed the pot but left the black in the jaws Tam was not going to miss it for a third time. 5-3.

With victory in sight the new and fast becoming a firm favourite pairing of Ian & Craig went out to make the match safe for the home side.  Ian could have cleared from his first visit but just lost position by millimetres but enough to stop him making the clearance.  The opposition couldn’t capitalise and Craig cleared up the rest of the object balls but misfortune dictated the white was sitting on the black giving him no chance of potting.  Ian was snookered but managed to escape and put the black into a strong position.  The Compasses man attempted a safety but it was always a high risk shot, Craig was gifted a simple black. 6-3.

Gordon & Glenn battled through almost 40 minutes of pool before Glenn attempted a clearance that was always going to be tough.  The referee made the correct decision in awarding a foul despite Glenn potting his last ball, the white clipping the opposition’s ball before making contact.  With 2 visits it was, once again curtains for the home pair. 6-4.

Trevor and Tam again came out on top with the pub screaming for time. A rushed frame maybe but also one that was always controlled by the home side.
