Red Lion (London Road)
Another tough match in store for the Tulip ‘C’ team
came in the form of the Red Lion (London Road), the team who came second in the
winter league and are now a Premier A side. But with a full strength squad to
pick from the home side were not going to go down without a fight!
Things started well for the Tulip ‘C’ with Trevor
coming back from what looked like being a one sided encounter to win the
opening frame. Trevor’s opponent almost cleared from the break but snookered
himself on the last ball. Trevor then showed he is capable of playing a good
tactical game as well as having superb potting prowess by keeping his opponent
under wraps until given an opportunity to explode into a potting spree. When
given his chance Trevor needed no second invitation. 1-0
Ian’s good form of last Thursday failed to continue
and once again the Captain failed to make any real impact on his frame.
Although given a good chance to finish Ian’s confidence is at a low and he
failed to capitalise. 1-1.
Glenn and Waspy paired
for the first 45’s of the night playing what was undoubtedly the strongest
pairing in the Red Lion line up. With the travelling captain making a decent 19
break on the first visit, Waspy responded with a 10
and after the first exchanges the scores were fairly tight at 28-20. However
things went pear shaped after that with Glenn again struggling to make any real
break and the pair crashing to a 45-26 score line, Waspy
making 17 and Glenn only 5 after a 2 point deduction. 1-3.
MJ exploded on the summer league scene for the
first time this year giving his opponent hardly any chance to get into the
frame. MJ was in commanding form and gifted his opponent only two visits before
annihilating him. 2-3.
Tam levelled the scores with a similar display, but
his opponent only managed one visit to the table and making a decent clearance
before missing his fifth ball. Tam then went into hyper drive and wiped the
table clear with an impressive 8 ball clearance. 3-3.
Trevor & Ian put the home side back in front
despite Ian’s inability to score convincingly. Trevor however was more than
capable of carrying his ailing skipper and made a decent 29 score despite a 2
point deduction. With Ian making 14 the pair managed the win 45-38. 5-3.
Glenn fought very hard against major luck from his
opponent. The Red Lion player looked set to have fouled the black but watched
with delight as the ball sat over the pocket covering Glenn’s yellow. From
there Glenn was playing for time and almost got away with it when he managed to
clear the black out of the pocket without fouling. However this bit of fortune
only sealed his downfall as he left his opponents last ball exposed for the
finish. 5-4.
Waspy put the home side on the brink of victory with a comfortable win
against Eamonn, a player who played for the Tulip ‘C’
during the last winter league. Never really in any danger the Wasp took full
control of the table and gave Eamonn only a few half
chances before putting the final nail in the coffin. 6-4.
All that was required was for Tam & MJ to
hammer that nail home. But it wasn’t going to be a simple game for the two
rockets of the Tulip ‘C’. Tam was unusually quiet in his performance but was
perfectly balanced by MJ’s potting skills. MJ’s break of 14 put the Tulip pair
in a commanding position but they were gradually pegged back to a 34-37 score line
with the home side just in the lead. A missed pot by MJ gave the travelling
side a glimmer of hope and they raced off to a 42-37 lead. But luck held out
for the home side and a poor shot gave Tam a chance to finish, a chance he
gladly accepted with his highest break of the evening. The Tulip boys won 45-42
with Tam making 13 after a 2 point deduction and MJ a very good 30.
